“THAT GIRL” REVIEW (Muzik Reviews, June 28th)
Despite her being from Miami, you are probably not all that familiar with LaGaylia Frazier. She is rather accomplished in her current home of Sweden however, to which she moved in 2001. Frazier comes from a musical family and began playing the piano at age five, but decided to stick with singing as a teenager. You may recognize her from her appearance in the Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone film The Specialist that was released in 1994. After catching the eye of Swedish pianist Robert Wells in 1999, LaGaylia was booked to his Rhapsody in Rock tour and has been in high demand in Sweden ever since. Her talent and vocal range has led to her playing mostly jazz based music up to this point, but on That Girl EP, Frazier looks to get back to the soul and funk sound she loves most.
What I enjoy about That Girl is its simplicity. It’s a nice, clean recording that isn’t trying to hide anything with overproduction or effects. Over six tracks it gets sexy, funky and smooth. The title track is the best place to start of course, and it just has this sexy vibe to it that I get into more with each listen. “Brand New Day” is just a dirty, funky tune that gets you bobbing your head in no time. My two favorite tracks would be “My Meditation” and “Closing Circles” though. The first is a slow, mellow, soulful jam that really showcases LaGaylia’s vocals. The second is a nice mix of styles. You get these nice funky verses, but more of a poppy sounding chorus. It makes for a nice tune that is accessible to a wider audience. While That Girl is only a six song EP, it is a good mix of style and showcases Frazier’s ability as a vocalist. Lyrically it isn’t anything earth shattering, but the lyrics are well understood and relatable. Besides, LaGaylia Frazier is more focused on getting back to more of the style that she loves on this release. It’s a fine recording of an excellent soul/jazz vocalist with strong musicians backing her and is worthy for a Floridian getting more attention back in the States.
Key Tracks: My Meditation, Closing Circles
